Birthday Ode to Heidi

Happy Birthday Dear Heidi, Happy Birthday to you!  We were so glad we were able to have you here last year to celebrate your birthday with us and the other birthday people.  Congratulations on completing 17 years!

We all wish that we could give you a great BIG birthday hug!  To be with you as you celebrate!  I hope your Mom gave you a hug from all of us!  (She gives good hugs!) Skype just isn't the same!

I remember the day you were born.  I was there.  You were a sweetie.  Omi is holding you in this picture.

You had such blonde hair and big blue eyes.

You hung out with your cousins a lot!  You photobombed a lot of the Meng family kid shots.  We didn't mind.

We liked having you around.  We can't wait for you to come visit us at the new place!

You and Thomas looked so cute together at Aunt Anita and Uncle Nathan's wedding!

As you have gotten older you have become such a people person!

You have done a good job keeping your old friends as you have made new ones.  That is a wonderful skill.

Enjoying each day that God has blessed you with.

We have enjoyed seeing you grow physically and spiritually!

Becoming the beautiful young lady that you are today!

We are so glad that you got to spend the last year with us.  We will always have special memories of the Christmas 'Girl's night out'  Your Mom did such a nice job coordinating and hostessing it.

Then there was the English Country Ball.  Such a nice way to spend time with the cousins!

Selfie with your sister!  Family gatherings just aren't the same without you and your family here.

We love you Heidi and we pray for you!  Hope your day was really special!

This ends my photo documentation of your life.  One photo for each year!  Blessings!  The Mangos

Closing Scheduled.

We are really excited to close on Tuesday.  We will also get the keys on Tuesday as well!  Let the moving begin!

This is the Old White Farmhouse. It was built in 1905.   It has been our home for the last 18 years.  We have all the windows replaced and it is updated.  If anyone wants to buy it, it will be for sale soon!

Thursday night is date night.  We went out the farm to talk to the seller and get all our questions answered before we sign and get the keys on Tuesday.  It was dusk by the time we got a chance to walk around.  Mist was coming off the pond and the fields.  It was really pretty!

The Boss and I were going to walk to the back of the property.  We only got about half when we gave up because there wasn't a path and we were knocking plants down.  There is a stream on the back of the property.  We wanted to see it, but we will have to wait until after harvest to see it.  It was getting dark.

Here is my DH looking like a farmer.  He looks good in his jeans as he inspects the crop!

By the time we got back to the car it was pretty dark.  I did notice for the first time that there is an old fashioned weather vane on top of the barn.

Sisters!

I love it that my girls are working together.  Michelle was asked to write a blogpost for a friend's blog.  The blog is about fashion.

Michelle selected her outfit and accessories with care.  Then it was time for the photo shoot.  She asked Elizabeth to take her photos.  I love it that my eight year old was able to take these pictures.  Although, I have to admit that it was Michelle who chose the setting and the poses.  I love to see them working together!

If you would like to read Michelle's post you can Click Here to go see it.

Labor Day 2013

One of the main purposes of my blog posts is to keep family that are far away updated on our lives...
(ie. This is not a profound post.  Just pictures of the latest family event)

My sister and her husband, enjoying the beautiful weather. I really like this picture.

Levi and Ian playing corn hole with their Grandpas.

 Ian

Sadie was tired.  School schedules are in place.

Isaac

My DH and Dad enjoying some down time.

Eating in the garage.  It was a cool evening.  All the food was delicious!

The corn on the cob has been delicious this year.

Michelle's pies were present.  They were soooo good!  One was peach and the other was cherry, made from cherries from our own tree.  They were GF too!

After the little ones left, the older children got in a game of pinochle with Grandma and my DH.  Dad was giving coaching to the beginners.

It was a lovely evening!

DONE WAITING!!!!

Back of the farmhouse

Just heard from the bank this afternoon that Fanny Mae is done verifying the verifications on our loan!  Hallelujah!!!  We are now ready to schedule the closing.  It should be either Saturday or Monday.  You should have heard the yelling and excitement in our house when the email came in.  Everyone so excited!  The stress and strain of waiting was making everyone ready to be done with this process.  Now the hard work begins!  We have to get ready and pack.  Not sure when the moving date will be.  Definitely, before the end of October.

Here is the document that caused such happiness!

Hello,

I am pleased to inform you that your loan is now in our closing department and final conditions have been cleared.  An escrow closer will be assigned to your file and she will coordinate with the title agent to prepare documents and a HUD-1 settlement statement.  The title company will be calling both seller and buyer to schedule the closing appointments for each.

Please plan to have a certified check drawn up for the funds needed to close (buyers, that is).  Additionally, plan to bring photo identification (driver’s license works just fine) to your closing appointment.

If you have any questions or concerns for me at this point, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Kind regards to both,

Waiting -Updated

The Loan Officer contacted us on the weekend!  She says all the paperwork is collected.  Everything will be turned into our 'friend' Fannie Mae, Monday morning!!!  Then we should hear shortly if the paperwork beast's appetite has been sated and the loan is going to be released, or will it require more offerings.  Once it is released we should be ready to close within 2-3 days.  Hopefully, DV, before the end of the week.  Not holding our breath, but hope springs eternal!

Will post here when the news arrives!

Honoring our Grandparents

I am truly blessed to have had wonderful Grandparents and Great Grandparent!  This is a photo of my Great Grandma and Grandpa Lambert.  By the time I was born they lived in St Petersburg FL.  We would go down most every year to visit them.  My Grandpa would read books to me by the hour.  One of the first phrases I learned to say was "Read a book Grandpa!" The love of reading was transmitted to me by both sets of Grandparents.

My Grandpa worked as a train engineer.  He also smoked a pipe.  Every time I smell pipe smoke something like his brand, it transports me back to my early childhood and visiting them in FL.  Incidentally, He died of lung cancer when I was about 12. My Grandma was a gentle lady. She was very patient with us as children.  She lived to be 81 and then she died of lung cancer also.

These are my Mom's parents.  My Grandpa died too young.  He wasn't even 70!  He was one of my very favorite people ever!  He was a great game player.  He was excellent at pinochle and horseshoes.  He was a quiet man who gave the best hugs ever!  He adored Grandma, even when she insisted on finishing most of his sentences.  He worked as an electrical engineer in the steel mills.  He was in a union and his schedule (re shifts) was always changing.  He built the house for the family himself. He loved daffodils.  He loved to go fishing and so did Grandma.  They raised a big bed of strawberries every summer so they would have money to go to Canada fishing.  All their different activities involved family.  Whether it was playing games or going on vacation they did them with their extended family.  I am blessed to be able to remember a few fishing trips to Canada with lots of cousins and grandparents and aunts and uncles.  The old guys were always happy to take along a child or two.  My grandpa taught me how to clean fish.  From the time I was six or seven we had to clean any fish we kept that was smaller than 12"!  Grandpa would do the bigger fish and the catfish.  He was a very patient teacher.

Grandma was a blessing.  She was a very neat and proper lady.  She was proud of the fact that she NEVER in all her life ever wore a pair of dungarees (jeans).  She also never did any formal exercise.  She was insistent that she would never lift weights.  Grandma was struck by lightning while she was in her house when she was in her mid thirties.  She had many health problems through the years.  Mostly relating to her gut. ( I strongly suspect that she may have had a gluten allergy)  She had at least three heart attacks.  She struggled with digestive issues and had many abdominal surgeries.  I called her my 'Grandma Grandma' because she was your traditional Grandma.  She never forgot a birthday or missed a gift giving event.  She was very affectionate and really enjoyed her grandchildren.  She was feisty but sweet.  She never considered herself very smart as she had had to repeat a grade in her elementary years. ( She did graduate from high school.)  BUT she would finish the newspaper crossword every day  and she read all the time.  Even when her mind had almost totally slipped away with dementia, she would catch you if you mis-added numbers or misspelled a word. She was doing word search puzzles right up until 3 days before she died. We were blessed to get to spend her later years with her close by.  She and Grandpa were excellent example of faithfulness in marriage.

Our children are blessed to have a godly heritage on both sides of their family.  My DH parents met in college and raised a family of 9 children together.  They are both still living.  They currently reside in NM with a daughter and her family.  Bill worked as a science and Math teacher in the inner city for 30 years.  Then they retired and went to work at the New Tribes Flight training base in AZ for the next 18 years. Dad did maintenance and Mom ran the library and had other duties.  My father in law spent much time holding Bible Studies with prisoners in Arizona.  He would go to the jails as often as 10 times a week.  This picture was taken at one of their last visits to our house.  They are no longer able to travel up to Ohio.  They are in their mid eighties.  Now we go as often as we can to visit them!

This is an old picture of my Dad's family (me and the guys).  The oldest looking gentleman was my Dad's grandfather.  Then my Grandpa Austin Reader next to him.  On the left side is my uncle Paul and his son Tim and then in the middle on the floor is my Dad's youngest brother, David.  When my Dad was 13 Grandpa bought a farm right on SR303.  My dad remembers with great fondness those years of living on the farm.  Grandpa had his own hanger and airstrip on the farm and taught my Dad to fly as a teenager.  They had horses and a nice pond.  If I remember this right.... Grandpa started his working life working in a bicycle shop.  Then he worked for Goodyear tire and Rubber.  His final career was working for NACA ( which later became NASA).  He was well known for his inventiveness.  He often took principles and things he learned while working in the bicycle shop and applied them to spacecraft and rockets.  He was a very bright man ( and so are all his children).  He struggled with heart problems and high blood pressure all his life.  He had one of the first open heart surgeries done at the Cleveland Clinic.  He died of a massive heart attack at the age of 54 while saying grace over dinner.

This is My Grandma and Grandpa Reader at their farm.  I have very little memory of them together as I was only 4 when Grandpa died.  I do remember my dad taking me out to visit at the farm when I was a young child.  Mom and my sister would take a nap and we would go off to play at the farm.

After Grandpa died,  Grandma kind of lost her anchor in life.  She left the farm and bought a house and stayed there until her youngest finished high school.  Then she became a travel agent and travelled all over the world.  Israel was one of her favorite places to go. She also went all over Europe.  She moved to florida and was in the Clearwater area.  She moved from apartment to apartment.  She was robbed frequently.  One time her son was going to be coming home on furlough (he was in the navy) while she was on a trip.  She hid all her valuables, but she wanted him to know where she had hid them so he could use the TV etc when he got there.  So she left him a note.  She was robbed again before he got there, and everything on the note was taken, But at least the thieves didn't have to mess up the house to locate it.  She was a smart lady though.  Another time, she was home alone when thieves were trying to break in.  She hollered loudly, "David, get your gun, someone's trying to break in!"  They left in a hurry!
Grandma was an incredibly gifted knitter. Grandma would knit a sweater EVERY week during WWII.  All the ladies would get together and knit wool sweaters for the sailors. Grandma spent her last years near-by. Visits with Grandma were always fun and unique. She was a wildly creative lady.  Her projects (and food) either ended up amazing or terrible.  There was no middle ground. Mom and Dad took care of her and then she ended up at a nursing home when her dementia worsened.  She lived to be almost 90.

These are my parents.  They have been wonderful parents.  One of the neatest things in my life has been to see God work and change their lives through the years.  They have taught me much about faithfulness and hospitality.  My children have been privileged to grow up near them.

I know my children will always look back with fond memories to the times they got to spend with their grandparents... on both sides!
I know I do!

Keeping Busy While You Wait

First, a confession.  I have not been doing a good job of taking pictures lately.  Therefore the photos in this post are merely representative of what has been going on!

We are working on cleaning up  the backyard which includes splitting wood, stacking and getting some ready to sell.  We won't need ALL this wood as we won't be using it to heat with.  There is only one wood-burning fireplace.  If anyone local needs firewood, give us a call, we'll be happy to deliver it for you.  It is all oak and maple.

Today, Michelle got up early to bake pies for a local contest.   She was tired and discouraged when she didn't win.  They looked great and I am sure tasted delicious.  They were all GF.  Congratulations to our friend Joanne B for winning 2nd prize!

We are busy sorting and discarding.  Large art projects, such as this are being photographed and discarded.  Elizabeth painted this window about a year ago.  We just don't have space to store everything in the new house.  Downsizing is a lot of work and is very stressful to my slow decision making brain, but in the end it will be freeing.

Why this photo?  Because this weekend Paul is away at a christian camp helping to run the upper ropes courses and zip line for a group renting the facility.

If our guests from last night see this.... don't be offended.  This picture represents hospitality.  We have been having company lately.  Last night we had some dear friends over to dinner.  They brought their 8 children who still live at home.  The 'children' (aka teenagers and young adults) had such a good time playing 'ultimate frisbee' and other games in the back field.  I was really proud of the children.  They all participated in making the meal.  T-Bob made the chili, JoAn made the pasta, corn on the cob, cornbread and salad, and Thomas made the apple crisp for desert.  It was such a pleasant evening.

JoAn has been busy studying for her tax course.  I am really working to get all the school stuff organized and ready to go.  With all the delays I have to start school whether we are in the middle of moving or not.  Otherwise, school won't start until Thanksgiving.  The children haven't been too disappointed in having a later start, but it is time to get going!

One of our projects for today is to get the garden weeded and the plants that are finished cleared out.  I am still sorting and discarding clothes.  I need to get our homeschool notification in Monday, which means I need to fill in my list of proposed curriculum.  I think I will work on that during the OSU Buckeyes game.  Tomorrow is Grandparents Day!  Need to work on getting Sunday dinner prepped for tomorrow.  At least I know what I am going to make.  That is always the hardest part of the battle.

OK,  I am done talking about it and I am heading off to get it done.  Have a blessed Lord's Day tomorrow!

Hurry Up and Wait Some More

Sunset over the rear of the property
Today we finally heard back from the Loan Officer.  Guess what?   They want MORE paperwork.  What a shock?  What a surprise?!!! Well we are working on getting that all done and should be in their paper grubbing hands by Monday morning.  Then they say that the loan should be kicked out into the 'done processing ready to close' pile.  Then the bank will take about 48 hours getting their stuff together and then maybe by the end of next week we can finally close.

In talking to the loan officer we found out that all this extra paper work is for the Fannie Mae people.  Yes, the federal government is the one taking so long and wanting lots of copies of things that makes no logical sense.  We have had to document where every bit of money that we deposited in August came from.  "We worked and people paid us" doesn't carry much weight with them.  They wanted copies of checks.  We had to have our accountant certify that the money we took out of my DH business account was not going to bankrupt the business.  The list goes on.  It certainly wasn't near this complicated in the past!!   The scariest thing about it, is that this is the same federal government that wants to run healthcare!  I can just see all the forms we will be filling out explaining exactly how ill we are and how we managed to get sick and what exactly our job has to do with the illness and what we have done to treat this at home previous to coming in and why we waited so long to come in and why we don't just go home and see if it clears up on it's own.  Welcome to the New American Government!

In the meantime we wait to hear what they will want next or if they can agree to finally ok this.  All this has happened AFTER our loan was officially approved by the bank and AFTER we were pre-approved by the bank.  The appraisal did come in just fine.  Well, at least we know now that they are working on it.

We are peacefully waiting again.

WAITING is Hard!

Looking from the farm towards the back of the barn and shop
We are still waiting.  Everyday, the loan officer says that the loan will probably come through in the morning.  So far nothing.  They haven't asked for any new papers since Monday.  They keep reassuring us that everything is fine.  It will happen SOON.  But then all our 'friends' feels compelled to tell us their horror stories... like about the loan that was rejected at the last minute because the house was in two different counties. ( I checked, that doesn't apply here! :-)  ).  The loan that took 4 months to be approved because of questions re the wife's employment - the loan was based entirely on the husband's job and income.  In other words, loan officer's aren't necessarily playing by the same rules and logic that the rest of us do.  They have to deal with all the federal regulations and whatever.

Things weren't this complicated the last time we bought a house or even for the different refinancing we did.  This would not be a problem even still, but the seller put in a 25 day limit on the contract and that runs out next Tuesday..  The bank said this wouldn't be a problem, but as the time draws closer the the pressure increases. We also have a certain child who feels compelled to ask us TEN times a day if we have heard anything and whether we are getting worried yet and what we will do if the deal falls through and what we think the seller will do if we go past the deadline and what is the percentage likelihood that we will get it passed tomorrow and how much will the percentage increase for the following day and etc, etc, etc.  I am not sure if he is all that stressed about it or if he simply likes to push everyone's buttons and try and get them stressed.

Fortunately, we know who is ultimately in control.   He has promised us peace in the midst of any storm.  We are resting in God.

WAITING...

The barn with the little milk house in the front
Today is a day of waiting.  Waiting for the bank to finish processing our loan.  They keep coming up with new pieces of paper that we need to produce.  Copies of checks and verifications of a hundred and one things.  The money is sitting there waiting.  The seller is anxious for it to go through.  The lawyers are all set.  Just the loan underwriter needs to be satisfied about 'just one more thing'.

It is a little stressful.  We are confident that it will happen.  We want God's will for our life, and we only want this property if it is God's will.  We have done everything that we can do.  Now we just wait.

Once the underwriter hands over the final file, we can schedule the closing and get the keys.  Hopefully, all this will be done by the end of the week.  And so we wait some more.
